10 · Low water

Beautiful, without the water bill.

Xeriscape isn't rock and cactus. Done right, it's layered, colorful, native, and uses 40–70% less water than turf — while qualifying for Colorado Springs Utilities rebates up to $2/sq ft.

Overview

What xeriscape looks like with Ponderosa

Colorado's climate is high, dry, and increasingly unforgiving to traditional turf. A xeriscape done right isn't a rock yard — it's a layered landscape with native and adapted plants, a considered palette of gravel and stone, and irrigation that waters only during the first two seasons of establishment. After that, most xeriscapes run on rain alone.

Colorado Springs Utilities currently offers turf replacement rebates up to $2 per square foot (check the current program at CSU's website). We'll design to the rebate requirements and handle the pre- and post-installation paperwork. The rebate plus the long-term water savings means a properly scoped xeriscape often pays for itself in 4–7 years.

What every xeriscape job includes.

No hidden line-items. If it isn't in your estimate, we tell you before we do it — not after.

  • Rebate consultation — we confirm your property qualifies before breaking ground
  • CSU paperwork filed on your behalf (pre- and post-inspection)
  • Turf removal by sod-cutter or sheet-mulch method
  • Soil amendment matched to xeric plants (less compost than traditional beds)
  • Native and adapted plant palette: yarrow, penstemon, Russian sage, blue grama, rabbitbrush, sedum, and more
  • Cobble, gravel, or crushed stone mulching
  • Pressure-compensating drip irrigation (zones run only Year 1–2)
  • Boulder placement and dry-creek features where appropriate
  • First-year establishment watering plan
  • 12-month plant warranty

How we get there.

The same 5-step rhythm on every xeriscape project we take on.

  1. 01

    Rebate check

We confirm your property meets CSU's rebate requirements (square footage, turf type, visibility from street) before you commit.

  2. 02

    Design

Native-leaning plant palette, stone and gravel choices matched to your house, irrigation designed for Year 1–2 establishment only.

  3. 03

    Turf removal

Sod-cutter method (fastest) or sheet-mulching (better for soil biology). We handle haul-off.

  4. 04

    Install

Soil amendment, plants in masses, drip emitters, stone and gravel mulching, boulder placement.

  5. 05

    Rebate & establishment

We file post-install paperwork for CSU. You get a Year 1 and Year 2 watering schedule — after that, the landscape is on rainfall.

Honest numbers before you sign.

Questions we get a lot.

If you don't see your question, give us a call or send a note. Most emails get answered the same business day.

Is xeriscape just rocks?

No. A proper xeriscape has 30–60% plant coverage at maturity, with stone and gravel as mulch between. It should feel like a garden, not a parking lot.

Will it work in my HOA?

Colorado's HB 24-1161 and earlier laws protect homeowners' rights to xeriscape, but HOA design review still applies. We've worked with most Colorado Springs HOAs and can design within their palette requirements.

How much do I really save?

A 1,000 sq ft lawn in Colorado Springs uses roughly 22,000 gallons per year. A xeriscape of the same size uses 4,000–9,000 gallons once established. At current CSU water rates that's $80–$180 per year saved.

What about pollinators?

Native xeriscape palettes are pollinator gold. Yarrow, salvia, penstemon, rabbitbrush, and asters support bees and butterflies through the whole growing season.

Can I xeriscape just part of my yard?

Yes, and many clients do — typically converting front-yard turf (which uses the most water and is seen least) while keeping a smaller back lawn for kids and dogs.

What does year-round maintenance look like?

Very little. One spring cleanup (cut back grasses, trim perennials), one mid-season weeding pass, one fall cleanup. No mowing, no fertilization, no winterization beyond shutting off the drip.
