Walls engineered for Colorado hillsides.

Dry-stack, mortared, boulder, and segmental block walls — built with proper drainage, geogrid reinforcement, and a 10-year structural warranty.

Overview

What retaining walls looks like with Ponderosa

A retaining wall that fails isn't a landscaping problem — it's a structural problem, and in Colorado it can be an expensive one. Freeze-thaw, expansive clay, and summer downpours will find any shortcut. We build walls the way they're supposed to be built: on compacted base, with drainage behind, geogrid where the math requires it, and caps adhered with polyurethane so they don't walk off in a frost.

We work with Colorado flagstone, buff sandstone, granite boulders, split-face block (Belgard, Pavestone, Keystone), and poured concrete. For anything over 4 feet we bring in a structural engineer and pull the Colorado Springs permit. Under 4 feet we still build to the same spec.

What every retaining walls job includes.

No hidden line-items. If it isn't in your estimate, we tell you before we do it — not after.

  • Site survey and elevation check
  • Excavation and compacted road-base footing (6" minimum on small walls, 12"+ on tall walls)
  • Geogrid reinforcement on walls over 3 ft per manufacturer spec
  • 4" perforated pipe behind the wall to daylight or drywell
  • ¾" clean crushed stone backfill to within 12" of finish grade
  • Capstone adhered with polyurethane construction adhesive
  • Replanted or re-seeded disturbed areas
  • Engineering stamp on walls over 4 ft (included in project cost)
  • City permits pulled where required
  • 10-year structural warranty

How we get there.

The same 5-step rhythm on every retaining walls project we take on.

  1. 01

    Survey & engineering

We measure the slope, soil, and surcharge load. Walls over 4 ft get a stamped engineering drawing before we dig.

  2. 02

    Excavation

Dig to undisturbed subgrade. Over-dig behind the wall to allow drainage backfill — this is the step most contractors skip.

  3. 03

    Base & drainage

Compacted road base, perforated pipe wrapped in fabric sock, connected to daylight or an approved drywell.

  4. 04

    Block or stone laying

Each course checked for level and batter. Geogrid installed at the depth the spec calls for, not where it's convenient.

  5. 05

    Cap & cleanup

Caps adhered, top-course drainage composite installed where spec'd, backfill replanted, site hauled clean.

Questions we get a lot.

If you don't see your question, give us a call or send a note. Most emails get answered the same business day.

How tall can you build?

We routinely build up to 12 ft using tiered systems. Anything over 4 ft requires a stamped engineering design and a city permit; we handle both.

Do I need a permit for a short wall?

In Colorado Springs, retaining walls under 4 feet generally don't require a permit, but the wall still has to meet code. We build to code regardless of permit status.

Will the wall survive freeze-thaw?

Yes, when it's built right. The drainage gravel and perforated pipe behind the wall are what prevent frost heave — water can't freeze behind the wall if it can't stay there. This is non-negotiable on our builds.

Can you match existing stonework?

Usually yes. Bring us a sample or a photo and we'll source the closest available stone. Colorado has deep supply chains for buff sandstone, moss rock, and mountain stone.

What if I want a sitting wall instead of a retaining wall?

A freestanding sitting wall is a simpler build — no backfill, no geogrid — but still needs a compacted base and cap adhesion. We build them as part of patio projects or as standalone garden features.
